Rev. Dr. Obed Dashan

obed“SCUPE inspired me to see how I could work with the church for economic and political justice. It empowered me to work within the systems to help to affect change, and to empower others as well. SCUPE’s education taught me to navigate the multi-ethnic and multi-religious country context of Nigeria.”

Rev. Dr. Obed Dashan
General Secretary, Church of Christ in Nigeria

Rev. Dr. Obed Dashan is a Nigerian church leader and effective peacemaker in the context of violence against Christians by the extremist group Boko Haram, which regularly attacks Christians, kills pastors and burns churches. Obed leads churches in non-violent reconciliation efforts, often putting himself in harm’s way.

Asked during a recent visit to SCUPE about how he built the courage to engage in such a dangerous peacemaking work, he unhesitatingly attributed it to his learning at SCUPE.

“At SCUPE I learned how to understand the systems of power, economics, and justice within a larger political system. I learned how to integrate what I believe into the contexts where I work. I learned how governmental systems can either work to improve people’s lives or to cause more harm.”

“SCUPE inspired me to see how I could work with the church in Nigeria for economic and political justice. It empowered me to see how I can work within the systems to help to affect change, and to empower others as well. SCUPE’s education taught me to navigate the multi-ethnic and multi-religious country context of Nigeria,” he said.

Rev. Phena Dashan is the Provost of the Program for Theological Education by Extension in Nigeria which enrolls about 3000 Nigerian pastors.
